Water is draining nicely from eastern Bangkok, but to the west the job is much more complicated and frustrating.

Drying to the east, wet in the west

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday she expected eastern Bangkok to be dry before the New Year, but she was not as optimistic about the west.

She admitted it was very difficult to drain floodwater from the western districts where there are fewer water drainage facilities than on the eastern side.

The good news on the western side is that Rama II road, the country’s main road link to the South, has not been flooded yet.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had installed water pumps along the road so floodwater has not flowed onto the road's surface.

If the road link is cut, the government hopes to have a detour route open soon. Yesterday, efforts continued to salvage the Suphan Buri-Taling Chan Highway 340 that was flooded earlier.

Chaninthorn Chukhwan, the director of the Highway Department's Nonthaburi Road Maintenance Office, said the department has already pumped water out of about 5km of the flooded stretch of Highway 340. The total length of the flooded stretch was 12km.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Senator Rosana Tositrakul, continues her efforts to help Thonburi drain water using a “local wisdomapproach.

Yesterday she claimed considerable success for the water pushing devices that have been installed in three smaller canals.

A total of 20 devices have now been installed, she said, and they are now draining a volume of water equal to nearly half of the 15 million cu/m a day drained by the BMA

Each device is made up of two connected, 200-litre containers with their bottoms sawn off, forming a "tunnel" which helps speed water flow when connected to a motorboat.  As the boat propellers spin, water is funnelled through the tunnel. This helps boost water pressure and causes it to flow quickly and forcefully, Ms Rosana explains.

Dredging the canals was also key to the drainage effort, Ms Rosana said. She blamed the government and the BMA for underestimating the flooding situation. Over the past weeks, floodwaters could not be drained out to the sea due to clogged canals
