Thai national coach bans striker Sompon
Striker Sompong Soleb, in yellow, has been banned from playing for the national team for life after he was found guilty of a hit and run and drink-driving.
Striker Sompong Soleb is now officially a former national team player.
Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer wasted no time in removing the Buriram FC star from the national side after learning he had been found guilty of a hit-and-run collision and drink-driving.
Schaefer said the player's behaviour was unacceptable and that he had been left with little choice but to hand out a severe punishment.
"He went out from the training camp without permission. He got drunk and caused damage to another person's property," the German coach said.
"As a national team player, he should have set a good example for young players. Instead, he set a bad example. He betrayed the fans and the national team so he should no longer wear Thailand's jersey."
Sompong, a forward for First Division champions Buriram FC, was arrested near Suvarnabhumi airport early yesterday. He had run away from his car after it collided with another vehicle before officers at Suvarnabhumi police station discovered that he was drunk.
He later pleaded guilty to both charges and a Samut Prakan court sentenced him to a one-month jail term, suspended for two years, and a 5,000 baht fine.
"I'd like to apologise to Thai fans and Buriram FC," Sompong said afterwards.
The Sompong-less Thailand team plays Norway tonight at 7 pm in the King’s Cup at Rajamangala National Stadium.
Tickets cost between 100-500 baht and are available at the stadium.
