Bang Bua Thong applies lessons from floods
Bang Bua Thong residents learned two big lessons from last year's flooding disaster: do not underestimate the power of water or that of human cooperation.
Bang Bua Thong district in Nonthaburi was one of the areas hardest hit. The entire district was covered by 1.5m to 3m of water.
Floods caused by a collapsed dyke on Oct 18 quickly spread over the district, driving residents from their homes.
District chief Ronnachai Chitwiset said both residents and the government have learned lessons about how to deal with such disasters in the future.
"Residents would know now that they can't underestimate the floods and should prepare themselves well ahead of time," Mr Ronnachai said.
He said the flood also showed that progress could be made if government officials and residents know how to work together. "Now, we have evacuation drills and waterway dredging and clean-up projects to help us prepare.
"We also have plans to raise the median divider so it can act as a flood barrier," Mr Ronnachai said.
The district had proposed a 100 million baht project to the Transport Ministry to raise the median on Bang Kruai-Sai Noi Road by 50-80cm.
The district had also asked the Department of Rural Roads to raise its roads by the same height.
Mr Ronnachai said raising the roads to act as a levee would help spare the business district and many homes.

Bang Bua Thong municipality mayor Arwut Jaroennonthasit said the town would complete dredging and dyke reinforcements within three months.
The work should help protect Khlong Bang Bua Thong from flooding up to a height of 3.14m. Mr Arwut said, however, that building structures to hold back the water is not a long-term solution. He stresses the need for better evacuation procedures and designated shelters.
"We have to practice so evacuation drills become instinctive. We need a system where people know where they are supposed to go and agencies work with each other," Mr Arwut said.
People cannot afford to be complacent and have to be careful what news they choose to believe.
