Many Facebook users have changed their profile image to the visage of Guy Fawkes.
What is this Guy Fawkes mask anyway?
The popular mask image of Guy Fawkes has reached Thailand in a big way. Long popular with hackers here, it has now been adopted by groups attacking the current government.
Many local Facebook users have even changed their profile photos to the Guy Fawkes image and they have been posting anti-government messages on prominent Facebook pages like those of the Phue Thai party and Panthongtae Shinawatra, son of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
But who is this Guy Fawkes and how did his face become so famous?
Guy Fawkes was born in England in 1570. He is most famous for standing guard over a supply of gunpowder which was to be used to blow up parliament and to assassinate King James I on November 5th, 1605. Fawkes and his group wanted to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne.
The plot failed. Fawkes was caught and executed in 1606 as were many other plotters.
The failure of the plot is still celebrated in England on November 5th with fireworks and bonfires and Guy Fawkes masks.
The mask that we see today, however, was designed by illustrator David Lloyd for the graphic novel V for Vendetta, published in 1982, and its 2006 film adaptation.
It has become a popular symbol of protest, worn by members of anti-government, anti-multi-national corporation, anti-censorship, anti-anything groups around the world.
Here in Thailand anti-Thaksin groups are trying to make it their symbol. "The people's army has risen and it will root out the Thaksin regime from the country" is their slogan.
Interestingly, the rights to the David Lloyd version of the mask are owned by the major US corporation Time Warner. So when protestors buy Guy Fawkes masks to protest against big businesses, they are actually paying a big business for the right to do so.
