A robber in pink

The two convenience store clerks.

A pink raincoat is not the normal choice for a robber, but this was no ordinary thief. Not only did he steal 2200 baht from a Phuket convenience store on Tuesday, but returned minutes later leaving a 10-baht coin on the counter.

Why? Police believe the robber might have been thinking that if he returned some of the stolen money and then was caught, the court would go lightly on him and keep him out of jail.

A jail term is a good possibility since police found the robber's fingerprints at the store – and on the 10 baht coin.

Wanna Ketkaew, 28, and Fontip Rakrit, 25, two clerks at Family Mart convenience store in Phuket's Thalang district, told police that the robber was wearing a pink raincoat, a pair of shorts, a motorcycle helmet and a sanitary mask to cover his face.

The man parked his motorbike and ran into their store during a heavy rain storm, Ms Wanna said. He directly approached the two staff and threatened them with a knife before grabbing 2,200 baht from the cash register and fleeing out the door.

A few minutes later, with the two clerks still discussing the robbery, the same man, in the same outfit, returned. He dropped a 10-baht coin on the counter – and then took off again.

Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai last Saturday, a bank was the target. In a well-planned operation, robbers broke into a Kasikornbank branch in San Kamphaeng district.

They covered a security camera at the rear of the building with tape and then disabled the security alarm by cutting the wires, police said.

Everything worked perfectly to plan until they found they were unable to open the safes. They left the bank with only the 200 baht they found in a drawer at the bank counter.
