The PM likes nice things

The Prime Minister and many of her ministers are very rich people.

This was made clear again when on Tuesday the National Anti-Corruption Commission published the assets and liabilities of members of the Yingluck Shinawatra cabinet, following the swearing in of new members on June 30.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reported 628.6 million baht in assets and 27 million baht in liabilities, but she wasn't the richest cabinet member.

That title went to Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana, whose listed assets total 3.09 billion baht more than his liabilities.

The asset information for each minister is quite detailed and it includes specific information on their possessions, including cash, buildings, vehicles and valuable personal items they own.

Obviously, there was much interest in the prime minister' s possessions and people who took time to look through the list were not disappointed.

They found that Ms Yingluck owns 73 items of personal accessories, 57 of which are an assortment of jewelled ornaments totaling 41.78 million baht, including a four-karat diamond ring worth  2.3 million baht.

Others include nine wristwatches of different brands, including Rolex, Cartier and Patek Philippe (1.81 million baht). Her seven most expensive handbags all are Hermes brand, and worth 2.1 million baht.

The NACC report also showed Ms Yingluck possesses 12 items of jewelled ornaments, each of which are worth more than one million baht. The most expensive item is a 13.5-karat diamond pendant worth 7.7 million baht.
