Samsung "smartwatch" launched

Wearable technology was big news yesterday as Samsung unveiled its highly anticipated smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear.

The colourful, rather large, wristworn device allows users to make calls, receive texts and emails and take photos – if they already own a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or the new Note 10.1.

The Galaxy Gear has a 1.63-inch display (320-by-320) resolution, an 800 MHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. It has a 1.9-megapixel camera and speaker built into the wrist strap, and there’s a microphone for making calls over a Bluetooth smartphone connection.

Unlike its competitors, you won't need to take your phone (an Android version 4.3 Note 3 or 10.1) out of your pocket to use it. Upcoming Android updates will make it more accessible, but the Galaxy Gear will likely be limited to Samsung Galaxy devices.

Most reviewers who got a chance to use the Galaxy Gear yesterday seemed at best lukewarm to the device, focusing more on its limitations than it good qualities.

"Sluggish," "bulky" and "expensive (US$299)"  were three of the most commonly used adjectives. Many noted its relatively short battery life – no more than a day – limited storage capacity and, of course, its tie-in with the Note 3 and Note 10.1. The available colours may be too sporty for formal use, one reviewer, added.

Clearly, it is a first-generation wearable and you can expect big improvements in the future if such devices become popular.
