The Thai women’s volleyball team are through to the finals of the Asian Championships, thanks to a thrilling 5-set victory over China. The Thai team plays tomorrow for the championship in a game where the whole country will be cheering them on.
The tall Chinese gave the Thai women plenty of trouble, but the Thais found a way to win.
Tonight at Chatchai Hall in Nakorn Ratchasima, the Thai women started slowly, losing the first set 19-25. They regrouped brilliantly however, to win the next two sets 25-19, 25-22. China won the next set 21-25, but, crucially the Thais raced out to an early lead in the deciding set, putting severe pressure on the taller, more powerful Chinese.
They wasted one match point at 14-13, but then held their nerve to win the final two points with an outstanding smash, a high-quality final serve and a clever block that had the Chinese looking the wrong way.
The final score was 16-14.
Throughout the tournament, the Thai teamplay has been outstanding allowing them to win over taller and stronger opponents
The Thai women have been Asian champions before in 2009. Now they are only one match away from being two-time champs. Their opponent will be either Japan or South Korea from a match taking place tonight.
