'Flappy bird' is simple, but addicting.
'Flappy Bird' stops flapping
Vietnamese game maker Dong Nguyen has tasted success and he didn't like it.
His simple, frustrating but addictive smartphone game 'Flappy Bird' quickly became the most downloaded game on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store late last month.
All users need to do is tap their screens to keep a clumsy on-screen bird flying through a never-ending series of pipes until, inevitably, it crashes. For many players, it created an unrelenting desire to keep their bird in the air for longer and longer periods of time.
With more than 50 million downloads, Dong's little game was reportedly earning him $50,000 (1.6 million baht) a day in advertising revenue.
But it was also gaining him something he definitely didn't want: attention.
Flappy Bird has been reviewed online thousands of times. Many reviewers have not been kind, accusing of Dong of blatantly copying parts of his game from other similar games. There were even rumours that companies like Nintendo might try to sue him.
Players, too, have bombarded him with complaints, demanding fixes for bugs, real or imagined.
It was clearly becoming too much for the 29-year-old. On Friday, he tweeted: "I can call 'Flappy Bird' is a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it."
A day later, he was back on Twitter, making the shock announcement that he was removing his game from the market.
"I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore.
And, 22 hours later, he did. It's gone.
There is not much to know about 'Flappy Bird'. This short Youtube review covers just about everything.
