On January 28, hundreds of local pop music fans gathered at Emquartier in Bangkok.

They were there to meet and greet Britain’s hottest new boy band, New Hope Club. These teenage wonders were in Thailand for the very first time to perform an acoustic show.

New Hope Club are Reece Bibby, Blake Richardson and George Smith. The trio first found success in 2015 after only being together for a few months. They landed a deal with Steady Records, home to fellow pop-rockers The Vamps. This was soon followed by the EP Welcome to the Club, which features the hit singles “Perfume” and “Fixed”. Since then, the boys have continued to steal hearts all over the world.

With thanks to Universal Music Thailand, S Weekly met with the handsome threesome the day after the gig to talk about their musical adventure.

How’s the tour going?

Blake: It’s been absolutely incredible. We’ve been to so many different places around the world. In Asia, we started in Manila, then flew to Malaysia, Singapore and now we’re here in Bangkok.

Reece: We just played in front of our Thai fans yesterday and it was amazing. We only expected around 150 people, but more than 500 turned up. Everybody’s been very nice to us. We really appreciate it.

How did you get signed to the same label as The Vamps?

Blake: We did a cover of their song “Wake Up” in October 2015. The video went viral. When The Vamps saw it, they signed us to their label.

Reece: We’re lucky to share the same management. They’ve been great mentors to us. They’re always giving us tips and advice.

You went on tour with them, playing to crowds of 10,000 people. Did you get nervous at all?

George: Oh yes. We still get nervous every time we play - even at the gig yesterday.

Reece: I think it’s normal. Don’t believe anybody who says they don’t get nervous on stage.

Blake: It gives you a special energy. It’s adrenaline running through your body, because you just want to do the best show you can possibly do.

How did you come up with the name New Hope Club?

Reece: We just liked the sound of “New Hope.” It’s very positive. We added “Club” to the end because we love the idea of the band being a club that everybody can be a part of.

Is it true that you decided to form a band after playing Oasis songs together?

Blake: Yes. We’re big fans of Oasis, as well as other great English bands like The Beatles. They are the greatest inspiration for any band that writes its own music.

You performed at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards. What was that like?

Blake: It was incredible because it’s something we all used to watch on TV growing up. It was also our first time playing in front of an audience that size.

Reece: It was on August 13, which is my birthday. So I had a great celebration!

We hear you’re working on an album. Will the music be similar to Welcome to the Club?

Blake: We’re not sure yet. We’re writing new songs all the time, whether we’re at home or on tour. We want to put our personal experiences into the music. It’s taken us a while to find the right sound.

Do have any message for your Thai fans?

Reece: I just want to say thank you to everybody who came to see us play. And if some of you missed it, don’t worry. We hope to see you when we come back to Thailand. Thank you for supporting our music.
