Cosocomo launches a new boy band

Pop music has long been associated with boy bands and girl groups. But in recent years, the trend seemed to be getting less popular. However, new acts like BNK48 have shown that boy bands and girl bands can still be successful.

Last month, pop label Cosocomo released some teaser video clips to introduce their new act, Goblin. Despite the scary name, the eight band members - Warut Chawalitrujiwong (Prem), Jakkapat Mungchitpinyo (Ice), Kavinpat Thanahiransilp (Jo), Komwit Akkaneevanich (Boston), Passakorn Assavachot (Bigboom), Vitchapol Somkid (Nice), Ausavapat Ausavaterakul (New) and Phumipat Chatchairungruang (Bank) - are handsome guys who sing fun, catchy pop tunes.

S Weekly met up with Goblin to talk about their musical adventure.

Why did you decide to call yourself Goblin?

Jo: We went through many different names, from angels to cartoon characters. Then we thought about our style and personalities. We’re a bunch of kids and sometimes can misbehave like little brats. So we decided a name that meant a little monster might suit us.

Ice: But we’re good monsters. We’re here to entertain and make people smile.

Can you tell us about the band’s history?

Jo: We’re all signed to the Copy A Bangkok agency. Each of us has some experience in show business. Goblin is a special project that was put together by the agency’s label Cosocomo.

Ice: Before working on this project, some of us already knew each other as intern artists, studying acting and singing together. Jo and I have modelled together a few times.

Is Goblin just a temporary project?

Prem: The plan is to release a couple of singles this year first. Then, depending on the feedback we receive from fans, we’ll see what happens next.

Ice: We’ve all been trained as all-round entertainers. So we’re not limited just to being a singer or an actor. Goblin is the latest project that we’ve been assigned to do. And we promise we’ll do our best.

What is the single “Sek (Magic Spell)” about?

Jo: The song is about a guy who would do whatever it takes to get the girl he likes - even put a spell on her!

Nice: It’s an easy-listening pop tune with catchy lyrics and hooks. There’s also some rapping in the song.

Can you tell us about the experience of recording the song together?

Ice: On the day, we were all super excited because we’d never recorded any music before. All of our training over the past year - the singing and dancing - was all building up to that.

Nice: At first I thought it was going to take all night to record the song. But it turned out to be pretty easy. Each of us did our part in less than 20 minutes. Except for Jo, who took a bit longer because he’s the main singer.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

Ice: We all have different tastes in music, but everybody likes pop and R&B.

Jo: I love slow ballads.

Boom: Nice, New and I are fans of hip-hop.

Bank: I listen to a lot of pop music from the ‘80s.

What’s next for Goblin?

Jo: We’re working on our second single, which should be ready by June. There will be a fan meeting event as well.

Ice: We’re all going to appear together in a TV show this year too. We’ll post more information about it to our fans on social media sometime soon!
