Hot stars make a cool film

On July 4, the fifth floor of Siam Paragon was packed as hundreds of media representatives and movie fans gathered for a press conference. What made this press conference special? Organised by TMoment, this was to introduce the highly-anticipated new film App War, which opens in cinemas on August 1.

Directed by Yanyong Kuruaungkoul, App War takes a look at the competitive world of the mobile app industry. The exciting young cast includes Nat Kitcharitt, Jingjing Yu, Thanapop Yuvijitr (Third), Sirat Intarachote (Too), Apiwit Reardon (Rang) and Ticha Wongthipkanon. The film has also attracted a lot of attention because it features BNK48 idol Patchanan Jiajirachote (Orn) in her acting debut.

S Weekly was at the press conference, where the director and actors told us what to expect in App War. Here are some highlights.

Can you tell us about the plot of App War?

Yanyong:  The film centres on the lives of two groups of app developers who end up battling against each other after they make similar mobile applications. Bomb and June first meet each other at a start-up contest and become friends. They share their ideas about how to create the perfect mobile app. Then they go away and start working on very similar concepts, based on their conversation. Without realising it, they end up creating something very similar. As a result, they become enemies.

What type of apps are they?

Jingjing:  Both Am Join and Inviter are a type of social media search app that allows users to find other people who have similar interests and to chat if both parties want to.

Nat:  But unlike real-life apps like Tinder, Am Join and Inviter aren’t just for hooking up, but for all kinds of relationships.

Yanyong, with so many of the cast new to acting, was it difficult to direct the film?

Yanyong:  Not at all. Even though it’s the first film for some of the actors, they’re all talented and really serious about what they’re doing. And I think the fact that there are so many newcomers helps to make the movie fresh and appealing.

Orn, how did you feel about your first acting role?

Orn:  I enjoyed it a lot. My character, Mind, is just an intern, but she’s very clever and able to pick up what the company is doing very quickly. Before joining the team, Mind’s life was lacking in direction, which is similar to how my life was before joining BNK48. So I can relate to the character a lot.

What makes App War an interesting film to watch?

Yanyong:  In addition to the drama and the love story, App War is definitely a film for the modern generation. Many people probably already have an idea of what start-up businesses and app-developing businesses are like. But this movie will give everybody a greater insight into how these businesses work, as well as the lives of the people involved in them.
