Police believe the bomber responsible for the powerful blast at a Nonthaburi apartment on Tuesday died in the explosion.
They have also linked the man, a militant red shirt supporter, to at least three other bomb threats and blasts in Bangkok in recent weeks.
The blast at the five-storey Saman Metta Mansion in Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi, is now known to have killed four people after police yesterday found a severed arm in a room rented by the man earlier identified as their suspect, Chiang Mai native Samai Wongsuwan.
The blast which took place at 6pm on Tuesday at room 202 ripped apart two units of the apartment block.
Police are undertaking DNA tests on the body part found in Mr Samai's room, but believe he probably died in the blast as he was assembling the bomb.
Nine people were injured in the blast, including two who are in a critical condition.
Forensic officers combing the wreckage yesterday found batteries, electrical tape, parts of air conditioner coolant storage cylinders, fire extinguishers and electronic circuits. They believe Mr Samai hoped to detonate the bomb in about a week, although they do not know where.
National police chief Wichean Potephosree said explosive materials found at the site were similar to those discovered at the sites of four previous bomb threats and blasts: near the Royal Turf Club, Santirat Wittayalai school, a parking lot at The Mall department store chain's Ngam Wong Wan branch and the Public Health Ministry.
The police chief said the apartment bomb was made of 10kg of TNT explosives.
Pol Gen Wichean said the investigation into the Bang Bua Thong explosion might shed more light on more than 10 bomb threats and attacks in the capital.
Deputy police chief Panupong Singhara na Ayutthaya is in charge of the bomb cases.
A source close to the investigation said the apartment blast bore the stamp of more than 10 bomb threats and attacks in Bangkok in recent weeks.
"We are trying to establish if they [the bombs] are the work of the same group," the source said.
Police say suspected bombmaker Samai rented the room on Sept 23.
A driver's licence with his name was found near the body part, said an officer at the Crime Suppression Division who is involved in the case.
DNA tests are being undertaken to confirm his identity.
A security camera at the apartment also captured Mr Samai seeing off a married couple hours before the blast, said the CSD officer who requested anonymity.
A native of Chiang Mai's Hang Dong district and a staunch red shirt supporter, Mr Samai was arrested in Chiang Mai in connection with an assault on a group of yellow shirt supporters on Aug 23 last year. He was suspected of throwing a grenade at an office of yellow shirt supporters.
He was believed to be involved in an explosion of a car in the parking lot of Poseidon massage parlour in Bangkok on April 5.
A manhunt is now under way for the married couple seen at the apartment with Mr Samai carrying fertiliser sacks before the blast.
Pattaraporn Petnil, 38, a housekeeper, said the couple, travelling in a Toyota pickup truck with Narathiwat licence plates, visited Mr Samai's room often.
She saw the three of them entering the apartment at 11am on Tuesday and making a number of trips between the room and the car carrying pillows and fertiliser sacks.
