Dressed in traditional attire, this woman of the Yi ethnic tribe native to Yunnan Province in southwest China did not look uncomfortable at all as I focused the lens and tried to capture her on camera

I spotted her by the road between Lijiang and Zhongdian. Yunnan has changed much. The roads are busier than when I was last there a few years ago, modern buildings have replaced old traditional houses and the young... well, they prefer Western clothes. But this elderly woman refused to go with the flow, hanging on instead to her traditional attire, particularly to her headdress that looks like a big black kite.

The Yi are one of 55 ethnic minorities to whom Yunnan is home and the most visible, discernible by their unique covering for the head. Animists, they worship the spirits of their ancestors, fire, hills, trees, rocks, water, earth, sky, wind and forests, and believe dragons protect their villages from evil, demons and disease.
