The major drug suspect who police allege was responsible for a drive-by shooting in Ayutthaya in which a 12-year-old boy was killed claims he and his brother meant to kill the occupants of a car for refusing to give way to his motorcycle.

Noppon Prasongsil, known as Jib Paikiew, 23, told reporters about the attack after he was arrested in a rented room in Sinthiwa Thanee housing estate on Rojana Road in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district about 2 am yesterday.

Mr Noppon confessed to drug trafficking and repeated attacks on motorists passing through the province at a news conference organised by police and local officials.

He said the Dec 4 shooting took place just after he and his brother Charnchai, alias Joke Paikiew, 29, had collected 200,000 baht from a methamphetamine sale in front of the Hitech Industrial Estate in Bang Pa-in.

Mr Noppon was returning on the inbound lane of the Asian Highway with his brother riding pillion, and was about to make a U-turn when the victim's car approached them.

He said he pushed his Honda CB400 Super4 motorcycle up to about 140kph while the Toyota Yaris car, carrying Phokin "Nong Tomee" Deephiu, the 12-year-old victim, tried to overtake them.

Mr Noppon said he switched on the right turn indicator but could not make the U-turn as the car driver, Chakrapan Deephiu, the 19-year-old brother of Nong Tomee, refused to give way.

He said that enraged Charnchai, who told Mr Noppon to catch up with the car. Charnchai then allegedly drew his 9mm pistol and fired three rounds at the car while it was opposite a Tesco Lotus superstore.

Charnchai fired 10 more rounds at the car before Mr Noppon took the Bang Pa-in bypass and they returned to their home.

The shooting happened about 12.30am on Dec 4 and seriously injured Nong Tomee and another 12-year-old boy in the car. Nong Tomee succumbed to his injuries a week later.

"At the time I did not know there was a child, Nong Tomee, in the Yaris car. I thought they were just teenagers who love to drive that way," Mr Noppon said.

"The shooting was meant to kill the people in the car. I would like to tell the family of Nong Tomee that I and my brother are sorry."

Charnchai was killed by police in a raid on their Smile Mansion apartment in Uthai district on the same night Nong Tomee died. Mr Noppon managed to flee on a motorcycle when police stormed the mansion.

Mr Noppon said he fled to Rayong to hide but returned to Ayutthaya as he was running out of money. He was arrested yesterday at an apartment building not far from Smile Mansion.

Pol Gen Asawin Khwanmuang, senior police adviser and acting commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, claimed Mr Noppon had also confessed that he and his brother were responsible for two other drive-by shootings.
