FLORAL Journey: In a floral circle by Sakul Intakul

Asian civilisation is built upon four major kinds of plants - rice, coconut, banana and bamboo. While rice is the staple diet for the people in this part of the world, coconut, banana and bamboo not only add to rich Asian culinary delights, they also yield parts that the people in Asia use to produce their arts and crafts. Bamboo is one fine example.

In Asia, you find bamboo being used to produce almost anything imaginable. It is used to make houses, furniture, utensils, vehicles, food containers and toys. In the world of Asian basketry, bamboo proves to be an indispensable raw material. Baskets of different forms, shapes and sizes are fashioned from woven bamboo. And there are always specific baskets for specific things.

Inspired by the round and flat baskets for mackerel commonly found in any Thai local market, I create today's flower display. To begin, I prepare a thin strip of dry bamboo skin approximately one centimetre in width. I then gently bend it to create a circle. Then to secure both ends of the bamboo strip in place, I use two pieces of copper wire to tie them to the circle.

I proceed to prepare the leaves of variegated lily turf by adhering them with double-sided tape. Then I stick one end of the leaf on my bamboo circle. Across to the other side of the bamboo circle, I stick the other end of the leaf. In the same way, I continue by randomly placing more leaves on to the circle until I create a criss-cross pattern. Select the flower for its inflorescence

Then I snugly fit the stem of the flower in between the two leaves. And now we are all in the same circle of flowers. Beauty, wealth, health and happiness always
