Kasit: Tells Thais to contact embassy
Thailand plans to join forces with Malaysia and Indonesia to help evacuate their citizens trapped in protest-hit Egypt.
Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya carried a message on his personal Twitter account yesterday to say the Southeast Asian neighbours would evacuate their nationals as quickly as possible.
Mr Kasit did not go into more details of the joint effort, which was agreed to by the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors to Bangkok.
He said the three countries would send further charter flights to Cairo soon, while Malaysia had pledged to send a ship to pick up its people.
Thailand has asked Malaysia to help evacuate Thais on the ship, Mr Kasit said.
A third Thai Airways International (THAI) charter flight will be sent to Cairo soon to evacuate more Thais.
Mr Kasit said 800 Thais trapped in Egypt had shown an interest to return home but each flight could accommodate only 300 passengers. There are between 2,500 and 2,600 Thais, mostly students, still in the Egyptian capital.
Mr Kasit asked Thais in Egypt to contact the Thai embassy in Cairo so the government could assist them to leave the troubled country as quickly as possible.
He said people in Thailand who could not locate their loved ones could contact the Consular Affairs Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Habib Madsen, a Thai student in Cairo, said the government should speed up its assistance to evacuate students because the Egyptian capital was in turmoil.
"The protest in Egypt is getting more violent. The Thai students are waiting for help from the government," he said.
"We are experiencing difficulties living here. All commodities are so expensive because most shops are closed down. More importantly, we can't go out of our homes to buy food."
Since the protest in Egypt erupted, the government has sent two THAI charter flights to pick up Thais from the north African country.
A group of Egyptian businessmen in Thailand is planning to converge on the Egyptian embassy in Bangkok today to protest against the political violence.
