The Singapore-based mobile media firm expects to earn US$1 million from mobile advertising in Thailand this year. Most would come from games via smartphones and tablets.

Ted Iannuzzi, the CEO of Didmo of Sweden, said mobile applications were moving into cross-platform content. As well, web-based development tools are enabling casual users who lack programming knowledge to create apps. They can be distributed via low-cost SMS, e-mail-to-mobile, or through automatically generated QR Codes.

"This trend has brought a change to the industry by putting mobile content creation in the hands of individual users," he says.

The shift from feature phones to smartphones is forecast to expand downloads of applications by two to three times, says Pratthana Leelapanang, assistant vice-president for value-added services of Advanced Info Service (AIS).

Thailand's mobile application download market is forecast to worth 600 million baht this year and to reach one billion baht in 2013, he said.

AIS now has 15,000 applications in its App Store supporting Java and Symbian operating systems. It is on the verge of expanding into Apple iOS and Android platforms.

We aim to have between 8.5 million and 9 million data users this year, up from 7.5 million last year," he said.

Pakorn Pannachet, head for value-added services of DTAC, said Thai mobile data users were expected to reach 17.5 million this year.

Utai Khumkong, deputy director for mobile internet convergence of True Move, said the company was developing digital games for tablets and smartphones to accommodate cross-platform applications.

True expects its App Center revenue to grow by 20-30% this year, from 100 million baht last year.

Thanapongphan Thayarattakul, the managing director of 23 Perspective, an online and wireless communication services provider.

His company's Amazing Thailand app, developed for Tourism Authority of Thailand, has been downloaded by 100,000 people - 80% of them foreign tourists and expats - since its inception late last year.
 
It plans to provide a Thai-language application for the TAT with enhanced features in June, promoting it as a trip planning assistant with hotel, dining and sightseeing information...

casual users -
people who are not experts (or computer programmers), who do not have a lot of time to spend on some task or activity

distributed - made available to customers (through stores and middlemen or the internet, for example)
generated - created

QR Code - a two-dimensional barcode readable by camera phones, made from black patterns arranged in a square pattern on white, the information encoded can be text, URL or other data, common in Japan where it was created by Toyota in 1994, QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response (See Wikipedia)

trend - a new development in clothing, make-up, etc, a gradual change ทิศทาง แนวโน้ม

expats - people who live in other countries outside their own country, they live a long time in a country but they are not citizens of that country 
inception - the beginning, the creation of something new
provide - to give someone something that they want or need
