Please free my sick son, Veera's mum begs
The mother of Thai Patriots Network coordinator Veera Somkhwamkid has made an emotional plea to Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni to grant him a royal pardon as quickly as possible.
"My son is ready to seek a royal pardon from the Cambodian king. As a mother I beg for mercy from the king for him," Mrs Wilaiwan said yesterday in a phone interview with the Bangkok Post.
Mrs Wilaiwan, who is in her 70s, came out for the first time to reveal that Veera, 54, had decided to seek a royal pardon after she met him last Friday in Phnom Penh's Prey Sar prison.
"We were so close to each other. We talked about everything at the prison. I felt pity for him as he didn't look well. He told me that he almost died of a high fever," said Mrs Wilaiwan, who has spent almost 300,000 baht on travelling to visit her son in Phnom Penh over the past two months.
Mrs Wilaiwan said Veera told her he was bedridden with a high fever around the middle of last month and become unconscious for a moment.
After that he was taken to see a Cambodian doctor inside the prison who gave him medication until he got better.
Mrs Wilaiwan said she was very concerned about her son's health and if it was possible she wanted to take him out of the prison to see a Thai doctor at the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.
"I am writing a letter to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva asking for him to help contact his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen to allow my son to receive medication outside the prison," she said.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdee said Thai embassy staff in Phnom Penh had not been informed about Veera's worsening health by Prey Sar prison warders. Mr Thani said embassy staff had sent food twice a day but had not met with them.
"Prison staff never informed us about Mr Veera's health," Mr Thani said.
Mr Thani said the embassy would ask Prey Sar prison to allow a Thai doctor to see Veera.
