If we go by the number, then 39 should indicate a success.
Yes, we're talking about the 39th National Book Fair and Bangkok International Book Fair 2011, the cherished annual event for book lovers, which is set to open today at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). Organised by the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (Pubat), the event will run until April 6.
The national book fair began as a low-key event held along a small street beside the Education Ministry. Since more and more have Thais adopted reading habits, the [book] market expanded and so we had to find an appropriate place that has a vast space and was also easily accessible, which is why we moved to the QSNCC about 11 years ago," said Pubat President Risuan Aramcharoen.
And the success of the book fair reflects the expansion of the reading culture in our society, she added.
Every year we have more publishers, books, and customers. This year, we expect some 400 publishers, with more than 2,000 new publications, and about 1.4 million customers.
With "Open a Book: Open the World" as its theme, the event will embrace a myriad of premium-quality educational materials and books covering every imaginable field.
"This year's theme is to promote the vision that books and reading can be a passport to an endless world of knowledge. Reading helps increase the immune system of thought; readers can gain access to information that enables them to develop their vision and creative thinking [skills]," she noted.
Though, she conceded, the fair seems to cater more to Bangkok readers.
"We admit that reading culture hasn't really grown in the outer provinces as much. However, Pubat has made moves to reach outside Bangkok, starting with the Ubon Book Fair 2010 held in Ubon Ratchathani. And this year, we will launch another event at Pacific Park Sriracha Chonburi from June 25 to July 3," she said, adding that Pubat must take into consideration local interests when deciding to hold a regional book fair.
When asked if the book fair had an adverse effect on individual book stores - since research has indicated that book stores have fewer customers during the fair - Risuan said that it was not so.
The fair attracts customers because of its variety, rather than discounted prices. It offers all kinds of books from almost every publisher and bookseller. Some publishers use it as an opportunity to launch new books and organise talks by award-winning authors, poets and illustrators. Customers don't receive these services from general book stores. And book stores that offer discounts on books can still draw customers. in.
Pubat encourages bookshops to hold promotional campaigns in their stores during the 13-day fair, as this would help increase income and boost reading culture.
What about new reading trends such as e-books? Does she see it as a threat?
From a business viewpoint, we have to go forward and adjust ourselves. Now we are waiting to see how deeply e-books are involved in people's reading habits. If e-reading grows immensely, it will be a new page for the book fair.
Still, e-books have their shortcomings, as not everything can be put into electronic format. Besides, paper-form books will still play an important role in our reading culture.
Launching new books in paper form before digitalizing them may be a way to solve that problem for the best-sellers, while e-reading is more suitable for reference books because it is more convenient and reduces publishing costs.
Risuan said she could not say exactly which direction the book fair would develop in, as it is up to the reading trend and the market. The book fair offers a great experience to all book lovers - hearing first-hand from their favourite authors and getting their autographs, having their pictures taken with their cherished mascots and storybook characters, and participating in a variety of learning activities.
