Politics: Pracha forgives shooting plotter by Reporters
Former Pheu Thai MP for Samut Prakan, Pracha Prasopdee, who survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday says he knows who is behind the shooting and has forgiven the person.
At a news conference yesterday morning, Mr Pracha burst into tears and said he had forgiven those responsible for the attack.
Mr Pracha showed reporters the bullet wounds to his back. He said nine bullet fragments were still lodged in his torso. He also showed a 3-centimetre-long head wound caused by an M-16 bullet.
Mr Pracha recalled the moment he was attacked, saying he was returning from a funeral. Attackers sprayed rifle bullets into his sedan when he was in front of Phra Pradaeng post office near Big C Phra Pradaeng superstore on Suksawat Road in Samut Prakan.
After realising he had been shot twice in the back, he abruptly stopped his car, laying down under the console of his sedan, and called Wallop Yangtrong, a former Thai Rak Thai MP for Samut Prakan, to seek help.
Mr Pracha said after firing a rifle at him, the attackers also shot pistol bullets into his car before leaving. He waited in the car for about 10 minutes before a team of rescue workers reached him and they rushed him to Bang Pakok 1 Hospital.
The attack was likely to have been politically motivated, he said. However, he declined to comment on who was behind the attempted murder. He had already given all the information he has to the police. He called on the police to investigate his case fairly.
In an earlier telephone interview on Wednesday, Mr Pracha said: "I know who ordered the contract on me. A son of a politician has passed on a message via a senior official that when I am no longer an MP, he will shoot me. Barely two days after the House dissolution, I was shot.
Mr Pracha said he called senior members of Pheu Thai such as Gen Chaisit Shinawatra, Pol Gen Pracha Promnok and former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat after the attack.
Please tell Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who said the attack was personal and that I was trying to link it with politics, to stop rubbing salt into the wound because I have never hurt him and at least he should come and visit me. Please be fair to all sides. "I want to thank Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for his visit and would like to ask him to help oversee security for all election candidates.
I also want to thank the police chief and ask all candidates not to take this too lightly because a candidate can be a good person but his associates might act beyond their orders," Mr Pracha said.
He said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra phoned him and told him to be more careful next time. Thaksin also told him to transfer from Bang Pakok 1 Hospital, where he was initially admitted, to Rama 9 Hospital.
Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree, the national police chief, said the investigation into the assassination attempt against Mr Pracha was progressing well.
Pol Gen Wichean has assigned Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang, the senior police adviser, to head the investigation into the shooting.
Asked if Mr Pracha had told Pol Gen Aswin the name of the person he suspected to be behind the assassination attempt, Pol Gen Wichean said he had not yet received any report about the matter.
