How to avoid sexual harassment from a married manager?
I have a terrible problem which needs your help. I am in my mid-30s and pretty good looking. Everybody says I am friendly, polite and humble. However, my life isn't as good and smooth as my outlook.
I come from a middle-class family upcountry. I had to work very hard to get to Bangkok to study because my parents could not afford my university tuition. In fact, I had to work to pay for my tuition and because of that I was unable to attend a government university, despite having good grades in high school.
In the end I graduated with a first class bachelor's degree in English from an open university. My English is good, as is my German and I got a secretarial job at an international law firm where I met my husband. We married and had a daughter.
However, my husband died a year ago after three years marriage, so I am bringing up our two-year-old daughter on my own. We have a close relationship and I enjoy cooking for her (I'm a pretty good cook). My problem is that when the company I work for merged with a big local firm, new management came on board. This was in January of this year.
Unfortunately, I seem to have attracted the attention of one of the new board members. He has come on to me in quite a suggestive way and has even tried to touch me. This man is married and in his mid 40s. He has authority and influence in the company. He invited me to dinner with him last month. What should I do? I can't afford to lose my job or jeopardise my career – I have my daughter to take care of.
I have read your column for a while and remember you had a correspondent with a similar problem. Your recommendation to her (to go to her HR manager) won't work for me because I don't believe my HR manager will stand up to this guy. Part of my problem is that this man is very careful when other people are around and won't try to take advantage unless we are alone. In other words I have no witnesses, which makes filing a complaint with the HR manager even harder. So what should I do? Please help.
