In March and April, Nakhon Si Thammarat experienced one of the most devastating floods and landslides in living memory.
However, residents have shown that rehabilitating their damaged neighbourhood is a matter of mind over money.
They have accepted help from outside their communities and begun the slow but steady process of rebuilding their homes and their lives.
Nakhon Si Thammarat was also hit by heavy floods and landslides last November.
Instead of waiting for aid from the government, residents looked within their communities to help themselves.
They found it electronically, through word of mouth.
A group called "Nakhon 360 Degrees" was formed when students from Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University met on Facebook and discussed what they could do to help.
Friends hooked up with more friends and spread the word about residents in need.
The group quickly expanded with many students, young people and residents of Nakhon Si Thammarat signing on to the cause.
Wuthichai Rattanapan, the Rajabhat University staff member who co-founded the group, said social networking allowed the group to get across relief assistance promptly.
The group's Facebook subscribers told their families who told their relatives and friends who are non-Facebook users about their flood relief campaign.
The experience of giving is rewarding, he said.
