NAKHONRATCHASIMA: A man was arrested after firing a ‘‘bottle rocket’’ containing mobile phones over the wall of Klongpai Central Prison in Sikhiu district Friday.
Kamfon Karnpian, 18, was caught after he allegedly used a homemade rocket launcher to fire the rocket, made of a plastic drink bottle, that contained five mobile phones along with batteries and chargers as well as 100 Sim cards over the prison wall.
Mr Kamfon told police that he had joined the plastic bottle rocket competition in Buri Ram and won third place.
Mobile phones are sold in the prison for 100,000 to 500,000 baht each. Some inmates are major drug dealers who continue the illicit drug trade from behind bars.
Mr Kamfon was spotted hiding in bushes near the prison. Police also found two rocket launchers and an air compressor at the scene.
The suspect allegedly told police he and three other men were hired to ‘‘shoot’’ the mobile phones into the prison. The three men fled on a pickup truck and left him alone.
