Tributes flow in for Whitney
Cause of death still unknown
LOS ANGELES, (AFP) – Musical stars paid emotional tributes to legendary US singer and actress Whitney Houston as they gathered for the annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, less than 24 hours after her shock death, aged 48.
Singer Jennifer Hudson was expected to perform as part of a “respectful” tribute at the Grammys, while the veteran producer who discovered her said Houston would want the show to go on.
“Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on,” said Clive Davis, veteran producer who said he was “personally devastated” by Houston’s death, hours before his traditional pre-Grammys party in Beverly Hills.
Houston, whose hits included “I will Always Love You” but whose career went downhill as she battled with drugs, was found dead in her room at the Beverly Hilton, shortly before Saturday night’s party hosted by Davis.
She was found dead in the bathtub, ABC news reported Sunday citing paramedics who had rushed to the singer’s aid but found her "lifeless."
The paramedics made attempts to resuscitate her, but the singer could not be revived.
“There were no obvious signs of criminal intent at this time, and it is being investigated by the Beverly Hills police department,” said a police spokesman on Saturday. An autopsy is expected Sunday or Monday.
Musicians, many already in Los Angeles ahead of the Grammys, lined up to pay tribute to Houston, who sold over 170 million records and also starred in movies before descending into a very public battle with substance abuse.
“She was one of the greatest singers I ever heard,” said veteran crooner Tony Bennett, on the red carpet at the hotel in Beverly Hills, where Houston’s body was found in her fourth floor room on Saturday.
With a ferociously powerful voice and a dazzling range, Houston achieved stardom as a pop-soul singer known as “The Voice” and the “Queen of Pop.” She also appeared in hit movies such as “The Bodyguard,” and “Waiting to Exhale.”
From a musical family that included mother Cissy Houston, a gospel star, and her cousin Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston grew up in New Jersey and started out as a teen model and then made a dazzling segue to music.
Her hits included “How Will I Know,” “Saving all My Love for You,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
