The government yesterday agreed to pay compensation to the family of Japanese photographer Hiroyuki Muramoto who was killed during the anti-government protests in 2010.

The decision came hours before Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra left for Tokyo on a four-day official visit ending on Friday with the main agenda to bolster confidence of Japanese investors after many factories were damaged by the floods last year.

Muramoto, a Reuters news agency cameraman, was shot dead on Din So Road in front of Satriwittaya School on April 10, 2010, as he filmed clashes between red shirts and security forces.

Ms Yingluck said the government will send a letter of condolence to Muramoto's family and the Foreign Ministry will proceed with the cash payment.

"We will inform his family in detail about the process of compensation and the Foreign Ministry will coordinate over the payment process," Ms Yingluck said. "He is eligible for compensation like other victims."

Ms Yingluck is not expected to meet Muramoto's family due to her tight schedule during the visit.

The cabinet yesterday approved the compensation payment plan for all victims of political violence beginning from the anti-Thaksin Shinawatra protests in 2005 to the crackdown of the red shirt movement in May 2010.

Eligible people will be in line to receive 7.5 million baht in two stages, and yesterday's decision will cover only the first 3 million baht.

The prime minister reiterated that the compensation was not aimed at appeasing any group in particular as it will cover all events such as the storming of Suvarnabhumi airport, engineered by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

Under the scheme, the Department of Social Development and Welfare will be responsible for registration and the payment process.

Permanent secretary for the PM's Office Thongthong Chandrangsu said the budget will cover all victims regardless of nationality who died or were injured, with the exception of those who still face charges or have been convicted of related crimes.

The eligible recipients will include victims' children, their spouse, parents and dependents.
