Royal cruise draws thousands

Thousands turned out to greet His Majesty the King Saturday as the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok to Nonthaburi was lit up by a spectacular show.

Colourful flags, performances and light and sound displays marked the royal cruise.

At 4.30pm, the King in a white navy uniform, accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, left Siriraj Hospital by boarding the double-decker Angsana, provided by the navy, to inspect riverside communities affected by last year's floods.

The royal vessel cruised upriver to Koh Kret in Nonthaburi before returning to the Royal Irrigation Department in Dusit district where His Majesty presided over a ceremony.

Along the river, members of the public had lined up waiting to pay their respects to the King. Many arrived from faraway provinces early in the morning to get the best vantage points along both sides of the river so that they could witness the King's cruise.

Most of them were clad in the royal colour of pink as they waved small national and royal flags as the cruise passed.

Various performances included Thai traditional dances, Cherd Singto (the Chinese lion dance) and marching bands.

A light and sound show was displayed on a giant screen as lights flashed on high-rise buildings along the riverbank.

Buddhist monks at monasteries along the river gathered in front of their places of worship to chant blessings for His Majesty's happiness.

Tight security was deployed along the route.

The vessel arrived at the Royal Irrigation Department's pier at about 7.30pm.

At the department, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reported to the King on five irrigation projects, followed by a multimedia presentation about royally initiated projects.

Still on the royal vessel, His Majesty placed his hand on a symbol of the five projects to officially mark the inauguration at around 8.15pm.

The ceremony was broadcast on a big screen set up onshore to allow people to see the occasion.

Cheers of "Long live the King" were heard as well-wishers waved hundreds of flags.

At 8.30pm, the royal vessel cruised back to Siriraj Hospital.
