Large bullet cache found in Bangkok
9/10/2012
A cache of at least 10,000 bullets and some hand grenades were seized when police raided a Bangkok apartment owned by a former deputy governor of Nakhon Pathom province on Monday night.
Acting on a tip off, they entered the apartment [at the Panya Rarm Intra Ua-arthorn project in Klong Sam Wa district].
They found four hand grenades, more than 10,000 bullets and 15 clips for M-16 rifles. There was no one there. No arrests were made.
Pol Maj Gen Prinya Chansuriya, deputy city police chief, said the owner of the apartment is a retired deputy governor of Nakhon Pathom province, who will be questioned later.
Initial enquiries indicated that the owner may not have known about the ammunition stored there as he had delegated the subletting of the apartment to a golf caddy.
Pol Maj Gen Prinya said all the ammunition is useable. It could have been stored at the apartment for a long time because the ammunition cases had been damaged by termites. The apartment seemed to have been vacant for a while, judging by the presence of dust and insects.
Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung suggested the ammunition could be linked to a rogue policeman who has been held in custody since 2010.
Mr Chalerm said he believed the ammunition was intended to be sent to the North of Thailand and exchanged for drugs.
