Sick former boxer bemoans fake gold
Former world flyweight boxing champion San Sor Ploenchit found out that about half of the 500 baht-weight in gold given to him by his supporters is fake when he tried to sell it to pay his medical bills.
Somchai Cherdchai, better known as San Sor Ploenchit, revealed his disappointment in an interview with Matichon newspaper.
It is a common practice in Thailand prior to all important fights for boxing supporters, mainly prominent politicians and businessmen, to enter the ring and give boxers gold as a way of showing their support.
Somchai, who is now battling brain damage caused by years of receiving blows to the head, said that he decided to sell the gold because he needed the money to pay his medical bills.
Sports Authority of Thailand deputy governor Sakol Wannapong said he felt sorry for Somchai and pledged to help him.
Somchai became the world flyweight boxing champion in 1996 when he beat David Griman from Venezuela and successfully defended his title nine times. He eventually hung up his gloves in 2003.
