The Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced to ten years in jail a former policeman arrested with a large number of M79 grenades and fuses during a rally of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in 2010.
The ex-policeman, Pol Sgt-Maj Parinya Maneekhot, 40, was stopped for a search while riding a motorcycle past a security checkpoint on Vibhavadi-Rangsit highway in Don Muang district of Bangkok on April 28, 2510.
Pol Sgt-Maj Parinya refused to be searched and fled into Vibhavadi Soi 1. While he was fleeing, a plastic bag dropped from the rear of his motorcycle. The bag was recovered by the police who followed him from the checkpoint.
Sixty-two rounds of M79 grenades completed with fuses were found in the plastic bag along with a police ID card identifying him as a police officer attached to Khu Khot district police in Pathum Thani province.
Pol Sgt-Maj Parinya was later arrested.
The prosecutors on Mar 3, 2011 filed a lawsuit with the Criminal Court, charging him with illegal possession of war weapons with intent to sell in violation of the Arms and Explosives Act.
In court, Pol Sgt-Maj Parinya said he was ordered by his superiors to mingle among UDD protesters on intelligence mission and denied the M79 rounds were in his possession. However, he could not produce evidence to show he was acting on an order from his commanders.
The court found him guilty of having war weapons in possession with intent to sell and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.
Pol Sgt-Maj Parinya's lawyer said he would appeal.
