16 southern insurgents killed in failed marine base attack
Colonel Pramote Promin gives details of the failed insurgent attack to the news media. POST TODAY
Post Today and Thai PBS are reporting this morning that at about 1:00am a group of about 50 southern insurgents attacked a marine base in Bacho district of Narathiwat.
Thai soldiers, who had been tipped off in advance by local residents, returned fire, killing 16 insurgents. Later reports said they had planted "chemo bombs" prior to the attack. Thai soldiers captured at least 13 M16 rifles and two pistols. No deaths or injuries were reported among the soldiers.
According to Colonel Pramote Promin, head of the public relations centre and deputy spokesperson for the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) for region 4, the insurgents were heavily armed and were disguised as soldiers. They were wearing uniforms, bullet-proof vests and came in three pickup trucks, two of which later escaped although they were riddled with bullet holes.
One of the men killed this morning was Marohsoh Chantrawade, an important insurgent leader in Bacho district, whose group included Suhaidi Tahe, alleged to be the killer of Narathiwat school teacher Chonlathee Charoenchol. Suhaidi was recently killed by Thai authorities and last night's attack might have been a reprisal.
Speaking this morning on Thai PBS, Fourth Army Region commander Lt Gen Udomchai Thamsarorat said no-one wanted this to happen and he felt sorry for the relatives of the dead, young men who had been misled.
He said a 24-hour curfew had been imposed on the several areas of the district and people had been asked not to leave their homes for their own safety.
