The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has gathered 500,000 signatures to back its latest demand for the government to take tougher action on the ivory trade.

The petition, signed by animal lovers from Thailand and abroad, was handed to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at Government House yesterday by Stuart Chapman, Conservation Director for WWF’s Greater Mekong Programme.

Asked by Mr Chapman to enforce tougher laws to end the ivory trade in Thailand, Ms Yingluck said the government recognised the importance of animal protection and will consider what action to take.

Thailand only allows the sale of ivory taken from captive native elephants. However, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has discovered illegal African ivory in the local market.

Government efforts in tackling the ivory trade are being closely watched by environmental advocates worldwide because the country has become a transit point and a market for ivory, mainly smuggled from African countries, said Phansiri Winichagoon, director of WWF Thailand.
