Boy dies after doctors fail to spot dengue

2/07/2013

KALASIN : A state-run hospital has admitted its doctors provided the wrong diagnosis in a dengue fever case which resulted in delayed treatment and the death of a 12-year-old boy.

Dr Som-aj Tangjaroen, director of Kalasin Hospital in the northeastern province, yesterday said the misdiagnosis led to the death of Decha Worasin, who lived in Ban Mon in Muang district.

A doctor who had recently graduated mistook the boy's symptoms for a peptic ulcer. The hospital was sorry for the mistake, Dr Som-aj said.

The hospital has offered preliminary compensation of 400,000 baht to Decha's family, he said.

The hospital would also try and prevent making further mistakes of this kind by providing the hospital's paediatricians with refresher training on diagnosing dengue cases, he said.

More than 100 patients arrive at the hospital each day with dengue-like symptoms, he said.

Despite their grief over Decha's death, his family appeared satisfied with the hospital's response.

The boy's grandfather, Samai Worasin, 71, said he hoped Decha's death would serve as a lesson to doctors. A mistake like that should never happen again, he said.

Decha's parents, Rasami and Sommai Worasin, said they took him to the hospital on June 24 because they were worried he had dengue fever.

The doctor, however, told them Decha had a peptic ulcer.

The parents said they had requested that Decha's blood be tested for dengue but the doctor decided to ignore their request.

The boy was rushed back to the hospital three days later when his symptoms grew worse. He had a high fever and was vomiting.

But Decha was not immediately admitted to hospital and was again provided drugs to treat a peptic ulcer.

Doctors on Thursday finally agreed to check his blood for dengue when the boy's condition deteriorated further, the parents said.

The blood test showed Decha was suffering from dengue but it was too late and the boy died later that night.
