The TV Lone Ranger, better than the movie version?

The TV Lone Ranger looked like a hero.

The Lone Ranger and his Indian "sidekick" Tonto may be new to young movie audiences, but the characters have been around for a long time from the 1930's on radio and the 1950's on television.

I grew up with the TV Lone Ranger, first watching it at a neighbour' s house before we got our own TV. The show was in black and white, there was no colour TV then, but that didn't matter because TV was so new and exciting.

You can judge for yourself about the latest Lone Ranger and Tonto, but the TV pair were true heroes. They were loyal friends -- both had saved the other from death – fighting against injustice to make America's wild west a safer place.

They looked like heroes too. The Lone Ranger rode a powerful white horse named Silver, wore a white hat, and had two splendid pistols in his magnificent holster. Tonto had his own sharp-looking Indian suit.

The stories were easy to understand, clear cases of right versus wrong, heroes versus villains. I have put together clips from a typical 20 minute show, so you can see how a story developed.

First, every story had the same introduction, dating back to the radio show. The Lone Ranger is seen riding and shooting his gun with background music from the famous William Tell Overture.

"The Lone Ranger

"Hi-Yo, Silver!"

A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty "Hi-Yo Silver!"

This is the story of one of the most mysterious characters to appear in the early days of the West. He was a fabulous
individual, a man whose presence brought fear to the lawless and hope to those who wanted to make this frontier their home. He was known as the Lone Ranger."

The introduction finished, every story had similar elements:

An injustice: Every story had to have an injustice for the Lone Ranger to fight. In this story, "High Heels", cattle farmer Dave Engles' water holes for his animals have been poisoned, forcing him to use the water on his good friend St Ivy's ranch.

An evil plan: Monk, the bad guy in the story, carries out a plan to destroy the relationship between the two good friends,
leaving Engles without water and forcing him to sell his land to Monk cheaply. Only Monk knows that the government is
planning to build a railroad through Engles' land, greatly increasing its value.

The evil plan is foiled: The Lone Ranger finds out about the railroad and plays a trick on Monk, substituting disappearing ink for real ink on the contract to buy Engles' land.

A big fight: There must be a big fight and this one happens when Monk finds out he is tricked.

A happy ending:The bad guy is caught. The good guys become friends again and peace returns to the area – thanks
to the Lone Ranger.

Watch the three-minute clip and you can should be able to follow what is going on.

Of course, times have changed. Here is a trailer from the movie, the Lone Ranger starring Johnny Debb and Armie Hammer. Which do you prefer?
