Business News Summary: 18-07-2013
Sales slow for iPhone & Toyota, baht weakens a bit reacting to US central bank policy.
iPhone sales slowing
The number of new smartphones from top manufacturers this year has been astonishing, including the new BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, and updated Samsung Galaxy S4.
Worldwide, the mobile phone market is shifting towards smartphones. Competition has become ferocious and Apple is lagging.
First-quarter iPhone shipments of 37.4 million fell below expectations.
The next iPhone model not expected until the second half of the year.
The full-year 2013 sales volume of the iPhone may be essentially flat at around 150 million units, compared to 134 million units in 2012.
Recent surveys have shown Google's Android operating system is used on around three-fourths of new smartphones. Apple's iOS accounts for around one-fifth of the worldwide market.
Toyota's sales in Thailand dropping back to normal
Toyota has revised down its domestic sales forecast by 10% to only 450,000 vehicles this year on easing demand.
Toyota has seen lighter sales since May, when car makers had delivered most of their cars to customers under the government's first-time car buyer scheme, which expired last year.
Yesterday, Toyota reported first-half sales dropped by 1.6% year-on-year to 237,318 cars.
The domestic market should return to normal.
Toyota earlier had hoped to increase total vehicle sales to 900,000 this year - 500,000 for the domestic market and 400,000 for export.
Last year, the company sold 516,086 vehicles in the domestic market, up by 78% from 2011.
Baht rises as Bernanke eases concern
Thailand's baht advanced after US Federal Reserve chairman Ben S Bernanke allayed concern that the United States plans to curb stimulus that has fueled demand for emerging-market assets. Bonds were little changed.
Bernanke said that the Fed's asset purchases "are by no means on a preset course" and could even be expanded should economic conditions warrant.
The baht touched a two-week high after exchange data showed foreign investors bought more Thai equities than they sold on each of the last six days.
The currency appreciated 0.4%, the most since July 11, to 30.97 per dollar as of 8.31am in Bangkok. The baht has retreated 7.8% from an April level of 28.56 that was the strongest since 1997.
