A Public Health Ministry committeeon Monday said it could find no solidevidence that chrysotile a commonform of asbestos was harmfulto human health.
The findingcontradicts an internationalbody of scientific evidencelinking exposureto the mineralwith variousforms of cancerand pleuralabnormalities.
The cabinetordered the ministryto investigatethe health impacts of chrysotilein 2011 after the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) proposed the substancebe bannedin Thailand.
Deputy permanent secretary Charnwit Tharathep, who led the study yesterday said his committeehad found insufficientevidence to suggestexposure to chrysotileposed health risks.
Chrysotile is commonlyused in brake linings, clutchsystems and heat-resistant householdappliances such as toasters, irons and ovens.
"We can't amendthe law [to ban chrysotile] without pointing to clearevidence [of negativehealth impacts] in Thailand," he said.
"We will certainly ban chrysotileif we can find solidevidence of the substance's impacts on people's health."
The committeewill report its findings to the cabinetnext month.
The World Health Organisation's website states that "all types" of asbestoscan cause lung cancer mesothelioma cancerof the larynxand ovaries, and asbestosis.
