Cop fires M16 rifle inside police station

A senior police officer sprayed bullets from an M16 rifle at a room used by investigators at Khlong Tan police station in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district on Wednesday afternoon.

No one was killed or injured in the incident on Thursday, but police obtained a warrant to arrest the man on charges of illegal possession of a war weapon and ammunition, and firing it in public without appropriate reason.

Pol Lt Col Burin Lalitathada, an inspector with responsibility for administration at Bang Yi Rua police station, is accused of firing his M16 rifle at the investigation room of Khlong Tan police station before leaving the gun and two magazines at the scene and driving away in a Honda SUV.

The entrance to the investigation room, which has concrete walls, was damaged in the incident, Pol Maj-Gen Suebsak Phansura, chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 5, said.

He said Pol Lt Col Burin had made no offer to turn himself in as yet.

He added that his colleague may have been stressed because he felt that he had recently been demoted, having been bumped from his role carrying out investigations to administrative work. It was also possible his actions stemmed from a personal problem, but this was not clear, he said.

Pol Maj-Gen Suebsak said the inspector was a good person, although sometimes bad tempered.

The police will try to find Pol Lt Col Burin, and later decide on suitable disciplinary punishment.
