The Friends of the Asian Elephant foundation has condemned two mahouts for physically attacking a baby elephant.

A video clip is circulating online showing two teenage mahouts using hooks to attack a baby elephant in Ubon Ratchathani after the pachyderm fell down due to exhaustion and lack of food and water. They also pulled the elephant's tail and kicked it several times.

Soraida Salwala, secretary-general of the FAE, said elephant conservationists wanted to condemn the teens for assaulting the baby elephant and guiding the animal onto the streets to roam.

The elephant foundation had supplied details to the Ubon Ratchathani livestock office and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry's National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department.

Elephant lovers and conservationists felt hurt after watching the scenes of cruelty, she said.

The incident cast Thailand in a negative light as the clip was circulated online. She urged authorities to tackle the problem of elephants roaming the streets.

Thongkham Jongjai-ngam, 40, the owner of a male elephant, Plai Tanjai, at Ban Taklang elephant village in Surin province, said the teens who attacked the baby elephant in the video were cruel. Most mahouts knew better than to harm their animals. Police have launched a hunt for the teenage mahouts.
