The PM talks about amnesty bill

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has just given a formal statement to the press regarding the controversial amnesty bill that has passed the House of Representatives and is about to be considered by the Senate.

She asked people to allow the legislative process to go forward and let the Senate carry out its duty in scrutinising the bill. She said no one would dare to interfere in the process

If the Senate rejects it, she said she was sure the members of the House would accept it.

She said that the bill was put forward in the spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness and was not intended to be divisive. It has passed through the normal parliamentary process. Still, she admitted, it had caused controversy, but not all of the criticism was fair.

She accused some critics of the bill as distorting its contents for political gain. She said it was not a money bill as claimed (presumably because former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra might get his seized assets back) nor did it have anything to do with condoning corruption. That is a totally separate issue she said.
