Float a Krathong in a Bangkok city park or in Chiang Mai or Tak and read about some weird things that happened during Loy Krathong.
Can we also float away corrupt politicians?
Loy Krathong round-up
Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Guru
This year's Loy Krathong will take place on Sunday (Nov 17). Here's our round-up of this year's Loy Krathong celebrations.
Think you've already seen creative krathongs? Wait until you hear about these cool versions we've discovered.
Krathong 2.0 - 20 engineering students from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang created a giant krathong which is 180cm in diameter out of aluminum and other materials in the shape of a lotus with petals that can move up and down via a controller to reveal a lighthouse in the centre. You can choose the colour of the light's too, if you want.
It will be extra cool if it can launch a rocket.
Eco Krathong - In anticipation of Loy Krathong in 2009, the director of the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion suggested people use floats made out of EM (Effective Microorganism) mud balls that purportedly improve water quality.
Krathong Boat - We think you all have fantasised about sitting in a big krathong and floating away like you're in a personal boat, crossing from Phra Nakhon to Thon Buri side and vice versa. Someone already kinda made it happen. In a press conference to announce the Loy Krathong celebration at Dusit Zoo in 2009, the deputy director sat in a big krathong floating on a pond in the zoo. Two elephants then pushed it away from the shore with their trunks but no word on whether the deputy director had to swim back to shore by himself. Should you want to attempt this, make sure you wear a life vest and find friends with really strong arms.

LOY KRATHONG REVELRY
Thai people celebrate Loy Krathong nationwide in Bangkok and the provinces.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has designated 28 public parks as Loy Krathong venues. We recommend Lumpini Park (BTS Sala Daeng, MRT Silom and Lumpini), Chatuchak Park, Wachira Benthat Park (BTS Mo Chit, MRT Chatuchak), Benjasiri Park (BTS Phrom Phong) and the riverside Santi Chai Prakan Park (Phra Athit pier by Chao Phraya Express boat). All celebrations at these parks will take place from 3pm-midnight on Nov 17.
To celebrate Loy Krathong with a northern flair, go to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival will take place on Nov 17 at Chang Klan Road in Muang district. Cultural highlights include releasing sky lanterns, a light-and-sound presentation and procession.

For an extended Loy Krathong celebration, check out Tak Loy Krathong Sai Festival which ends on Nov 20. Tak people have their own take on the floats. Their krathongs are made of coconut shells and strung together to form a long line. There will be a krathong line contest at Bangkok Bicentennial Bridge in Muang district of Tak. 055-514-341-3 for TAT Tak, facebook.com/taktravel.
