Late evening update

Here is the latest from our online reporters:

The secretariat of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has forwarded the nomination of Prayuth Chan-ocha as prime minister to the Office of His Majesty′s Principal Private Secretary for a royal command to officially appoint him to the post.

Gen Prayuth said while in Chon Buri today that he wouldn't make any moves until he is officially named prime minister after the royal endorsement.

However, once in office, he promised his cabinet would strictly adhere to the agenda and timeline set by the NCPO.

The junta's road map requires comprehensive reforms before any new general election is called. The military regime earlier said it expected new polls to be held in late 2015.

11:30 update

Prime-minister designate General Prayuth Chan-ocha has just left the 21st Infantry Regiment Royal Guards in Chon Buri. He seemed cheerful, but did not answer the questions of the waiting media army, saying only that he wanted to wait for the royal endorsement.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha is awaiting royal endorsement to become Thailand's 29th prime minister. The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has selected him to head the country's government by a vote of 191 for, 0 against and 3 abstentions, said to be the three NLA presidents.

Gen Prayuth, currently the head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO),  was unopposed and the whole process, including the nomination, endorsement of the nomination, and vote took only about 45 minutes.

Gen Prayuth was not in parliament during the vote. Instead he was in in Chon Buri at a function marking the founding of the 21st Infantry Regiment Royal Guards, a unit he formerly commanded.

General Prayuth is 60 years old and a native of Nakhon Ratchasima. He has been the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army since 2010. He is due to retire from that position later this year.

He is a member of Class 12 of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School. He was a long-time member of the 21st infantry regiment, known as the Queen's Guards (ทหารเสือราชินี) and is a member of the "Eastern Tigers" clique within the army which includes his predecessor Anupong Paochinda and former defence minister Prawit Wongsuwan.

He is best known for leading the May 22 coup d'etat in which the army seized power from the acting government.
