That’s entertainment

The entertainment scene keeps the Bangkok Post’s Onsiri Pravattiyagul very busy in a job that might someday appeal to us.

Whether she is doing interviews, previews or reviews, Khun Air, the manager of the entertainment section of the Bangkok Post is always ready for the challenge. Khun Air, along with the three writers on her team, even travel abroad to numerous events in order to obtain the top stories.

Jessy: What is your main responsibility as the manager of the entertainment section?

Air: I oversee the content, and I also look for what is going on around town. I look for stories about culture and entertainment. We also cover music, theatre, movies, television, and contemporary arts.

Sam: Who would you say is the most interesting person you have interviewed?

Air: I have interviewed many different people, but from the top of my head, the most interesting is probably Mick Jagger.

Jessy: How did your interview with Mick Jagger go? What was he like?

Khun Air: Well, surprisingly, I interviewed him over the phone. I hate interviewing over the phone because you can't get the full essence of the person you are interviewing, but in this case it was exceptional. He was surprisingly nice! He was quite talkative, and I liked the whole peculiar atmosphere of the interview as well. This was a few years ago, but I believe that it was the most entertaining interview I have ever done.

Sam: What is your favorite part of your job?

Air: Getting to go to events, I think. I love music, and being able to combine your passion with your work is one of the really good things about having this job. I think everyone on our team is sort of like that. We have a movie guy, Khun Kong Rithdee, who has a love of cinema. Basically, it’s best to love what you do.

Jessy: Whom would you like to interview in the future?

Air: Either someone really big or someone that is just starting. Or some legendary people that don’t give interviews anymore – or someone who is already dead, something like that (Air smiles).

Sam: How long have you been at the Bangkok Post?

Air: Off and on for about 11 years now. Right out of college I joined the Bangkok Post and then I stopped for a bit to go get my master’s degree, but I came right back.

Jessy: So are you doing what you love?

Air: Yeah, but it gets tiring. Not exactly tiring, but sometimes you get burnt out, so you just have to find your outlet. I take a few weeks off and travel.

Sam: What inspired you to become a journalist and be an entertainment writer?

Air: I think it probably stemmed from my love of reading, so its sort of a natural process. When you like reading, the next step is to write. I kind of fell into this job; I didn’t have any particular plans.

Sam: What are the main challenges of this job?

Air: Traveling is a challenge, because I don’t really like to fly. There are also time constraints and you have to meet new people all the time. Also, you have to be very disciplined, because you have a lot of freedom. My job isn’t from 9-5, but I have to focus on it all the time. It’s mentally exhausting, but it’s worth it because of the freedom I get.
