Sam and Jessy say goodbye

A short chat with my student reporters on their final day at the Bangkok Post. There are also links to all their feature stories.

Sam and Jessy say goodbye

Below is part of the short, unrehearsed chat I had with International School of Bangkok students Samantha Davin and Jessy Dahl just as they were about to leave the Bangkok Post after an eight-day stay working as students reporters.

If you are learning English, I suggest you listen to it before reading the text and see how well you understand it. You might want to look at the word list first, however.

Sam and Jessy did an excellent job while they were here and I have put links to all the stories they produced after the word list.

Terry: OK, today’s your last day.

Sam and Jessy: Yep

Terry: How long have you been here?

Sam and Jessy: We’ve been here for eight days.

Terry: Eight days. OK, generally, how’s it been?

Jessy: It’s been a very, very great experience for us.

Sam: We’ve definitely learned a lot and we’re so happy that we’ve gotten this opportunity to be here.

Terry: You’ve learned a lot?

Sam and Jessy:  Yeah.

Terry: Ok, for example. What are some of the things you’ve learned.

Sam: We’ve learned to be spontaneous in interviews and not just read off the questions you’ve come up with and we’ve learned a lot about writing and laying out from some of the people in this company

Jessy: And also some minor stuff, minor things from the writers that we’ve interviewed. They taught us about how to be punctual and how to be passionate in the work they’re doing and how to always be flexible as a writer.

Terry: If you could choose, what would you do (what kind of a writer would you like to be)?

Sam: I would … I want to be an entertainment writer. That is really interesting to me.

Jessy: Well, for me I would want to do Yvonne’s (Yvonne Bohwongprasert, a feature writer) job because I’m interested in social work and she does social issues.
Sam: That interests me too.

Jessy: Yeah, good role model.

Terry: Are you going to use any of this when you go back to school?

Sam: Yeah, I definitely will because I’m in a journalism class and I do interviews with people in writing, so I can use a lot of what I’ve learned here next year.

Terry: All right, anything else you want to add?

Jessy: Well, thank you personally…

Sam:  Thank you for helping us out.

Jessy: You’re a good professor and teacher in life too.

Sam: publishing our stuff on the Internet

Jessy: Yeah, a big part of what we did

Terry: Well, I thank you because you’ve given me how many…you’ve given me a lot of features, right? And we’re still not finished.  When you're back, we’ll still be able to put some of this up on the web in the future. So I should thank you. You’ve done an excellent job.

Sam: Thank you. We appreciate it.

Terry: You’re very easy to work with.
