Water, water, everywhere

Bangkok Post photographer Patipat Janthong was out and about in what appears to be the Siliom area yesterday. It's amazing that his camera survived to take these photos. Just to ensure our foreign visitors won't think that Songkran is completely out of control, however, I'll include a couple of photos by Nopparat Gingkeaw showing the more traditional side of the festival.

There were no captions to go with the photos, so we'll have to make our own descriptions. To get us started, here are some of the words captions writers might use.

Those who participate in the water-throwing activities are commonly referred to as "revellers," although "water warriors" might be more appropriate in some cases. The atmosphere is often described as being "wild," "congested," "enthusiastic," "genial" and, of course, just plain "fun".

Much of the vocabulary of Songkran deals with water, words like "spray," "splash," "stream" (of water), "pour," "drench" (adjective "drenched") and "soak" (adjective "soaked").

Songkran would be incomplete without crazy costumes. Some good words to describe them might be "bizarre," "ridiculous," "gaudy," "outlandish," "fearsome," "scary," or "intimidating."

Of course, there are many more "restrained" activities during Songkran as well and you will see an example at the end of the photo set.

As you look at the photos, think of appropriate words to describe them. If you have any suggestions, let me know on our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/bangkokpostlearning
