Maggie Rosenberg, a native of Brooklyn, New York says she can’t speak Thai, but she certainly can sing Thai. Her delightful music video is making her many friends here in Thailand and we’ll use it for our “Learning Thai” lesson today.

Maggie Rosenberg, a native of Brooklyn, New York says she can’t speak Thai, but she certainly can sing Thai. Let’s begin with her music video that has won her so many friends here in Thailand. Then, we’ll try to help Maggie make some improvements.

สาวสวยชาวบรู๊กลินคนหนึ่งชื่อ แมกกี้ โรเซนเบิร์ก เธอแต่งเพลงภาษาไทยขึ้นเพลงหนึ่งและร้องคลอกับอูคูเลเล เป็นเพลงฟังสบายๆน่ารักเหมือนเจ้าตัว เพลงเล่าว่าเธออยากพูดภาษาไทยเพราะอยากเป็นเพื่อนกับคนไทย แต่ยังพูดภาษาไทยไม่ค่อยได้  เธอพยามยามที่จะพูด อ่าน และเขียนภาษาไทย และว่า “ฉันไม่ค่อยเข้าใจ เวลาไปไหนๆ ขอให้พูดช้าๆหน่อย....”  เธอยังได้กล่าวถึงคำพูดที่ใช้กันบ่อยๆ เป็นภาษาไทยได้ชัดมาก คลิปนี้มีคำบรรยายภาษาไทยไว้ด้วย แม้ว่าภาษาไทยของเธอดีทีเดียว แต่มีเนื้อหาสองสามแห่งที่ยังไม่เป็นธรรมชาตินัก เรามาดูกันนะคะ

A lovely Brooklyn girl named Maggie Rosenberg wrote a Thai song and sang it accompanied with her ukulele. The song is an easy-listening one with lovely tune just like its writer. The songs says that she likes to speak Thai because she wants to be a friend of Thai people, but she says her Thai isn’t very good but she tries very hard speak, read and write it. Whenever she goes anywhere, she modestly says, “I don’t understand, please speak slowly” (in Thai). She also mentions a few popular phrases in very clear Thai. The video clip has Thai/English subtitles. Even though her Thai is very good, there are few places where the content is unnatural. Let’s take a look at the lyrics.

Where’s the bathroom?   
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม?   
Do you speak English?   
นี้อะไร? นั่นเท่าไร?
