Breaking news is one of the most-visited sections of the Bangkok Post website, averaging between 50,000 and 150,000 page views a day and between 25,000 and 50,000 visitors, depending on the news of the day. The day after the coup, for example, 66,000 visitors viewed 160,000 pages of breaking news.

Breaking news has to report the latest news and attract as many readers as possible but how exactly do they do it? Mr. Praphorn Prapthornkul, the deputy digital media editor explained to us the process of publishing breaking news.

Firstly they acquire their news from many different sources such as a news center (program), observing other news organisations and directly from other Bangkok Post news reporters. However the breaking news department has to check the reliability of the news sources. The breaking news team wants trust from their readers so they must double check their information to make sure that everything is correct.

Moreover, after Mr Praphorn receives news from the reporters, he will discuss this with his colleagues which stories are worthwhile doing, preferably through Skype since team members also work outside the Bangkok Post offices. “It is very efficient,” he says.

After a story has been written and checked, it will then be sent to his other colleagues to proofread the story to ensure it is all correct. Then it is posted to the main Bangkok Post website.

Lastly, Bangkok Post photographers send in pictures to the breaking news team and they are selected to match the story. Pictures are (also) acquired through other sources and agencies, such as AFP.
