B-SolBridge to grow future entrepreneurs

The newly-established BFSU-SolBridge International School of Business (B-SolBridge) in Beijing aims to build future international business leaders imbued with Chinese culture.

Recently, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) debuted its B-SolBridge International School of Business in Bangkok.

The new academy is the result of collaboration between BFSU - the first institution specialising in foreign-language studies in China - and SolBridge International School of Business of Woosong University in North Korea, a business school that follows the US curriculum.

"The goal is to put in place a good academic atmosphere by combining the strengths of BFSU's traditional education model and SolBridge's international tuition model," said Prof Peng Long, vice-president of BFSU.

Established in March this year, B-SolBridge offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course for international students in four areas, which are International Finance, International Marketing, International Business and Chinese Business Studies.

The school also offers a master's degree in international relations and economics, which is awarded after successful completion of the 2.5-year programme. All classes are taught in English by international instructors.

"Although there are a lot of universities in China offering business courses to foreign students, some of the teaching is still conducted in Chinese, which does not meet the wishes of some students," said Peng Liu, acting dean of B-SolBridge.

Apart from taking one of the business courses, students are required to enrol in one of the foreign-language courses, such as: Chinese, Japanese or Korean. The school also offers students Chinese studies, which include Chinese economics, culture, laws and social studies, in addition to Chinese language. Students study at BFSU's campus in Beijing.

"Students will be equipped with not only business knowledge but also Chinese [language and culture], and they will have the opportunity to network with the local Chinese people," said the acting dean.

In the upcoming fall semester, beginning from the end of this month, the school expects to attract 50 to 70 students, according to Mr Liu. Initially, the school is targeting students in neighbouring countries and Southeast Asian nations as well as eyeing prospective pupils in Europe and Africa, the acting dean added.

The institution's fall semester begins on Aug 30, while its spring term starts on Feb 21, 2011. The deadlines for registration are June 30 and Dec 30, respectively.

Acceptance is based on English competency, academic records, personal statements, extra-curricular activities and letters of recommendation.
