Alumni to boost St Xavier College

- +

Recently, alumni of St Xavier's College, Calcutta (SXCC), India, gathered at its first international convention in Bangkok on the occasion of the college's 150th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of St Xavier's College (Calcutta) Alumni Association (SXCCAA) ("the alumni association").

The event, entitled "Beyond Boundaries", was hosted by the Bangkok Chapter of the alumni association. Over 100 SXCC alumni attended the two-day get-together.

Reverend J Felix Raj, PhD, the college's principal and president of the alumni association, disclosed that the aims of the convention were to strengthen the alumni association and bolster the relationships among its members, as well as to gain the support of alumni to expand the college both academically and physically.

The alumni association has decided to allocate five million rupees (3.48 million baht) to the college to build a new floor to accommodate prospective postgraduate programmes, which are expected to gain the college independent-university status.

"We already have five postgraduate courses. We need to have five more if we want to become a separate university," said the principal, adding that the five additional programmes are expected to be launched within three years and that the college expects to be recognised as a university within five years. At the moment, the college is under the University of Calcutta.

The college will also build two new student residences for boys and girls, which will house around 500 students. Pawan Kumar Ruia, chairperson of Ruia Group and an alumnus of the college, has promised to fund one building. Alumni members will also award 25 scholarships worth 25,000 rupees (17,400 baht) each to 25 undergraduate students.

Besides the seminars and alumni activities at the function, there were cultural performances, and an auction was held to raise funds for the college.

Next year, a similar convention will be held in Dubai, according to the principal.
