Here is a good example of why you should learn to swim.

Early yesterday morning, about 1am, a German businessman named Saschi was on a ferry boat going to Koh Tao in Surat Thani from Chumphon.

He was sitting on the deck smoking a cigarette when the boat suddenly rocked, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the water.

It was dark and no one one saw him fall.

Saschi was a very good swimmer, so he didn't panic. He relaxed and floated in the water all night, letting the waves carry him.

Morning came, but he saw no one who could help him. Finally, about 10am he saw a fishing boat. He waved his shirt until the fishing boat captain saw him.

Altogther, Saschi was in the water for nine hours. He was exhausted, but he stayed alive because he knew how to swim.
