John and Mary were out walking their dog on a mountain trail in California near their home one day recently when they saw an old can partly buried in the ground.

They used a stick to get it out of the ground and they carried it back home. It was very heavy.

Soon they found out why.

It was full of old gold coins from the late 19th century, many of them in very good condition.

Later, they went back to where they found the can and began digging. They found seven more cans of gold coins.

Altogether they have found more than 1,400 gold coins.

How much are they worth? Donald Kagin, the owner of Kagin's Inc., a company which specialises in ancient coins, says they are probably worth more than $10 million.

That's why John and Mary are keeping their last name secret for a while.

Mr Kagin says you can soon buy some of the coins either through his company or Amazon.com
